EFL charges League One club and former directors over ‘multiple breaches’ of ownership rules

League One football club Barnsley has been charged with multiple breaches of English Football League (EFL) regulations that could result in a fine or points deduction.

Former owners Paul Conway and Chien Lee, who ran the club for five years before exiting in 2022, have also been charged.

Barnsley FC said: “The charges announced by the EFL today are the result of an investigation initiated by the club following an internal review into the shareholdings of former directors Paul Conway and Chien Lee.

“After bringing the issue to the attention of the EFL, the club has fully cooperated with the investigation at every stage and will continue to do so, as appropriate.”

The charges are focused on alleged failures to provide and publish accurate information about the club’s ownership, and allowing individuals to acquire a position of Control without prior clearance from the EFL.

Last season Barnsley just missed out on promotion to the Championship, losing to Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final at Wembley.
