Law firm falls into administration, with nearly 200 made redundant

A Sheffield-based legal and financial group has ceased trading, with 192 jobs lost.

SSB Group was headquartered in Navigation House, South Quay Drive. The group had been trading since 2007 and comprised SSB Law, SSB Funding, SSB Insurance, SSB Financial and SSB Compliance.

The legal side of the business supported claims in areas such as personal injury, road traffic accidents, medical and dental negligence, mortgage mis-selling, pension mis-selling, criminal injuries compensation and professional negligence.

SSB had run into serious financial problems, despite unveiling plans for major growth at the end of 2021, when it said it was taking on an additional 43,110 sq ft of office space to house more than 600 members of staff.

The group has now been put into administration. Anthony Collier and Kelly Burton of specialist business advisory firm FRP were appointed joint administrators on 4 January 2024.

Purchasers have been found for the company’s 42,708 live cases, with all claimants informed of the transition. A core team will be retained to help the administrators conduct a wind down of the business over the next few months.

Collier, partner at FRP and joint administrator, said: “The financial challenges facing SSB put incredible pressure on the business and, regrettably, meant it was unsustainable in its current form without significant investment.

“We’re working with staff to support their applications to the Redundancy Payments Service.

“While SSB is no longer trading, we’ve secured the transition of all live case work to new providers and have notified clients.”
