Key figure in Leeds’ redevelopment to leave city council after 30 years

Martin Farrington

Leeds City Council’s longstanding director of city development, Martin Farrington, has revealed he will stand down later this year.

The 56-year-old has been a key figure in the changing face of the city. He will end his 30-year career at Leeds City Council when he leaves at the end of September.

Farrington was head of asset management for seven years before moving into his current role as director of city development in September 2010, just as Tom Riordan started as the council’s chief executive.

Announcing his departure, Farrington said: “Being the Director of City Development at Leeds City Council is a dream job and it’s been an absolute honour to hold the position.

“It has provided me with a unique opportunity to work with brilliant colleagues and stakeholders over many years to help the city to grow and prosper.

“It’s been my privilege to work on and contribute to a wide array of services, projects and initiatives that will all leave a positive legacy for Leeds.”

In a LinkedIn post, Farrington shared images of some of the highlights of his time, including First Direct Arena, Victoria Gate and Headingley Stadium.

Tom Riordan led the tributes, saying Farrington will leave a “phenomenal legacy” in the city.

He added: “We will really miss you, Martin, and you’ve made a hugely positive difference to the council and the city. It’s been a pleasure working with you, and your knowledge of how to deliver development in the Leeds market has been vital.”

Eve Roodhouse, Leeds City Council’s chief officer for culture and economy, said: “As a leader you create the space for others to deliver within a framework of trust and accountability and yet you are always generous in sharing your expertise and there for calm and considered advice when needed. Most of all you are kind and honest.”

Arup’s Leeds office leader Tom Bridges, who was the council’s chief economic officer for five years in between his two stints at Arup, added: “What an incredible legacy Martin. I am hugely grateful for everything you have done for Leeds, and for the opportunity to work with you and learn from you.”
