Eight hectare extension planned for limestone quarry

The firm responsible for Darrington Quarry, near Knottingley, is proposing a major extension to the site.

Darrington Quarries Ltd, which is part of FCC Environment, explains the planned extension aims to extract about 1.3 million tonnes of Upper Magnesian Limestone over a four-year period.

A spokesman for the business said: “This is designed to ensure a continued supply of aggregate to meet future infrastructure and development needs, while also securing the future of local jobs and contributing to the local economy.

“The extension will cover an area of approximately eight hectares and will be restored to agricultural use, after completion of the extraction, with a minimum of 10% net gain for biodiversity.

“It will include appropriate mitigation measures to protect the safety and amenity of local residents.

“The project team has conducted a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to ensure any significant effects are appropriately assessed and mitigated.”

A planning application for the quarry extension, known as FCC West, is expected to be submitted to Wakefield Council in late 2024.

Darrington Quarries Ltd has today launched a public consultation on its plans, which will run until Monday 23 September 2024.
