Pet care specialist grows workforce and sells its products nationwide

A pet care business is expanding its product range and partnering with a supermarket chain.

Sniffers Pet Care has been backed by Calderdale Council’s business support service.

Sniffers has been providing pet products and services for over 40 years and is now one of the largest pet treat suppliers in the UK.

The company’s natural dog treat brand, NAW, launched around 12-months ago and the firm is celebrating its first year of trading by teaming up with Sainsbury’s. NAW products are now stocked in over 300 stores nationwide.

The growth of Sniffers has been supported by Calderdale Council’s Business Growth Team and Employment Hub, which was able to help with recruitment.

As consumer habits changed during and post-COVID lockdowns, the company was looking to grow and create additional product ranges.

When the company moved into its new large warehouse facility in Elland, it needed to take on more staff for assembly and packaging line roles.

With the help of the council Employment Hub, the business was able to recruit five new warehouse roles within one month. The hub has continued to help the company with further recruitment.

Since moving to Elland in 2021, Sniffers Pet Care’s workforce has more than doubled.

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Sarah Courtney, said: “Our Employment Hub is not just there to support people to find work, training or apprenticeships; it also works with local employers, supporting their recruitment needs and advising on employment and skills.

“It’s great to see this support is helping local businesses to grow and thrive, and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to help Sniffers with their recruitment needs and support their business growth journey.

“It’s a real accomplishment for Sniffers to have their products available nationwide and the company’s continued growth is helping to support jobs and investment opportunities in Calderdale.

“As part of our Inclusive Economy Strategy, we’re committed to doing all we can to unlock the growth potential of our businesses and bring new investment and jobs to the borough.”
