Overseas demand soars for Yorkshire company’s robotics technology

An engineering company which develops pipeline robot technology for the utility sector is growing its export volumes to Australia.

Harrogate-headquartered Synthotech Group has seen a 200% increase in orders for its pipeline products from a growing Australian customer base thanks to a partnership with Australia-based Detection Services.

The increase in demand is a result of the rapid expansion of the Australian water market, which was valued at over $4bn in 2022.

Synthotech develops advanced pipeline inspection systems and robotics to detect leaks and fix pipes.

The robots can be deployed remotely for long distances, which speeds up the investigation process to aid safety and reduce environmental impact. The robotics are designed, developed and manufactured in the UK.

Locating underground pipe damage and leakage poses a significant challenge, leading utility companies to dig up roads and pavements to accurately identify the issue, resulting in millions of yearly excavations. Extensive digging causes road closures and business disruption.

Synthotech’s team of engineers design and build a range of specialist products that are distributed globally.

It is a supplier of live access CCTV and survey systems to the energy industry, and gas engineers use its maintenance products in domestic and industrial environments.

The SynthoCAM H20 is a CCTV inspection system which will be deployed in Australia. It allows water networks to inspect drinking water pipes to ensure pipelines are leak free and working effectively without interrupting water supply to customers.

The company continues to invest in robots that detect and fix leaks in water and gas pipelines. Engineers spent two years developing the next generation of robots that can sense water and gas leaks in the pipes.

Synthotech has expanded into the drinking water, sewage, gas and telecommunications sectors, increasing revenues for its robots and engineering products.

The business currently exports its products, including its SynthoCAM H20, to over 18 countries. Last year, it hit a record milestone revenue of over £5m.

Mark Tindley, managing director, said: “We have experienced continued growing demand and interest in our products and services from customers across Australia’s water companies.

“As the market continues to grow and evolve, we’re experiencing huge interest in our engineering capabilities and a real need for innovation. This is leading our expansion drive in the country in partnership with Detection services

“Our SynthoCAM H20 in pipe CCTV is already helping businesses in the sector work more efficiently and sustainably, make significant cost savings, and minimise disruption to everyday life.

“We’re currently working with numerous utility organisations and establishing positive partnerships, paving the way for future innovation.”
