Multi-million pound market square revitalisation project set to begin

Regeneration work is due to start next week on major public realm improvements at Shipley Market Square.

This redevelopment is intended to create a contemporary and adaptable space, suitable for events and pop-up market stalls. The square will feature a new all-weather canopy meaning it will be able to host year-round events.

Existing permanent market stalls will be removed, allowing for a revitalised market to regularly take place under the canopy and along the promenade.

Rain gardens – shallow planted areas which receive rain run-off – with seating areas will be strategically integrated, creating an inviting space for families and visitors.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning, and transport, said: “We are excited to start this transformative scheme to make Shipley town centre greener and more welcoming.

“We’ve seen the amazing results of the public realm work we’ve undertaken in the city centre and we want to bring those same principles into the heart of Shipley.

“Removing the old market stalls will not only improve the look of the town centre but also make it feel safer and more welcoming, particularly at night.

“It will also give us the opportunity to revitalise our outdoor market offer. By creating an inviting and flexible space, we will increase footfall, support our shops and restaurants, and help businesses to thrive.

“This is a significant step towards creating a vibrant and adaptable town centre with a thriving market.”

Alec Porter, acting chair of the Shipley Towns Fund Board, added: “The revitalisation of Shipley Market Square is not only a strategic investment in our community but also a boost for local businesses.

“The work will also include new street lighting and the resurfacing of the existing car park. This transformation aligns with the towns fund’s commitment to economic growth and enhancing the overall well-being of our town.”

Work will be phased to allow markets and events to take place as much as possible during construction, which is expected to take approximately eight months.

Funding for the project is through £1m of Streets for People funding from West Yorkshire Combined Authority and it has been allocated a further £3m of Government funding through the Shipley Towns Fund.
