Work begins on York’s iconic former Quaker hospital

Heritage developer The PJ Livesey Group has started work on the iconic former Quaker hospital in York, The Retreat.
Set within 37 acres of lush green space, The Retreat on Heslington Road, is being redeveloped into 120 homes.
Founded by the pioneering Tuke family in 1792, The Retreat was established in response to inhumane treatment practices of the time, becoming a world-renowned example that influenced care practices across the globe.
The development will include conversions within the Grade II listed buildings, with many original features preserved. These will sit alongside newly built homes located on the north-east side of the estate
Phase one of the project will focus on the north-east section of the estate, delivering eight one to three-bedroom homes within Garrow Hill House and surrounding historic buildings. It will also include 13 newly built three to five-bedroom homes with eco features.
Georgina Lynch, managing director at PJ Livesey, said: “The Retreat is rich in history, architectural significance, and emotional connection. We’ve been immersed in the story and structure of this site since it first came to our attention, and we’re incredibly proud to be entrusted with its next chapter.
“We know just how much this site means to the city, and our aim is to honour that legacy through respectful, design-led restoration – delivering not just exceptional homes, but a historic haven; a true sanctuary for modern living inspired by the past.”
The Retreat continued to operate in its original capacity until the early 2020s, before planning permission for redevelopment was approved by York City Council last year.
