Many of the UK’s coastal towns have been caught in a perfect tsunami of under investment, social problems and a lack of opportunities.
Since overseas holidays became popular in the 1970s, these towns’ reliance on tourism for jobs and prosperity has left them on the edge when it comes to the economy.
While coastal tourism in England still generates around £5.8bn, the number of visits has fallen by 32 per cent since 2022, according to the New Economics Foundation (NEF) think tank.
