Brunch brand poised to launch its latest venue

Independent brunch brand, Federal, is set to open a new cafe in York this autumn.

Founded in Manchester in 2014, Federal is inspired by the neighbourhood cafes of Australia and New Zealand.

It operates three venues in Manchester and opened its first Yorkshire site in Leeds in December last year.

Customers in York can expect the same Federal experience already enjoyed by diners in Manchester and Leeds with a core menu featuring favourites, alongside seasonal food and drink specials that change regularly throughout the year.

Located on Coney Street within a Grade II listed building, the York cafe’s interior will combine Federal’s familiar warm and relaxed style with the character of the historic property.

The 100-cover venue will also feature a large outdoor area and a second level offering additional seating, as well as the potential to host private hires and events.

The expansion forms part of a £3m investment from Foresight Group to support Federal’s national rollout strategy.

Federal founder, Claudio Ribeiro, said: “York feels like a natural fit for Federal. It has a strong independent spirit, a huge student community and a thriving food and drink scene, alongside an incredible year-round visitor economy.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have found a fantastic location and we’re excited to create something that feels unmistakably Federal while celebrating the history and character of the building.

“York will give customers everything they know and love about Federal with amazing brunches, top-quality speciality coffee and five-star service.

“Our people are fundamental to the energy and personality of our cafes, and we’re looking forward to building a brilliant team in York.”

Fit-out work at the Coney Street venue is due to begin in late September, ahead of its planned opening later this year.
