Volcano latest: Flights cancelled as ash cloud causes more uncertainty

ALL flights out of Leeds Bradford Airport have been cancelled for the rest of today because of the ongoing volcanic eruptions in Iceland.

Flights took off from Glasgow Airport this morning but a new volcanic ash cloud created by the continuing eruption in Iceland has hampered progress.

Many airports, including Robin Hood and Humberside, and airlines said they would not resume services until at least 1am tomorrow.

The National Air Traffic Service said earlier today: “Part of Scottish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1pm to 7pm today, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000 ft.”

Mike Morton, director at Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, said when the airport did open it would most likely deal with diverted flights rather than scheduled services.

easyJet said its flights to and from Northern Europe would be cancelled until at least 5pm today.

A spokesman added: “The airline had hoped to resume some services earlier; however, unfortunately based on the latest meteorological forecasts and continuing emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere this is not possible.”
