Lighting specialist faces the heat at European awards

MEDICAL lighting specialist Brandon Medical is to represent the UK in the European Business Awards 2010.

The Leeds-based medical manufacturer has been short listed for the Business Innovation of the Year Award and the Business of the Year Award after impressing the judges with its new medical lighting technology and medical video teaching and training systems.

The system has been widely used within university teaching hospitals for surgical skills training for medics and surgeons.

The company has won a total of 11 innovation awards in the last two years for its brand new medical lighting technology HD-LED.

The patented technology gives the highest quality surgical lighting whilst being environmentally friendly and cheap to produce.

In 2009 the lighting technology was awarded ‘The Best LED in Europe’ for medical applications at the European Elektra awards 2009.

Brandon Medical is one of Yorkshire’s success stories. The company was rescued from receivership by its current owners in 1993.

Since then the company has doubled the size of its business every three years for the past nine years, providing more than 20 jobs.

Managing director Graeme Hall said: “Brandon Medical are dedicated to providing new innovations to improve hospitals and its patient care. We are thrilled to be recognised for our innovative designs and to represent Yorkshire at this award ceremony.”

Sponsored by HSBC, the awards promote examples of individuals and organisations that achieve outstanding results across a variety of disciplines.

Noel Quinn, HSBC head of commercial banking, UK, said: “I’d like to extend my sincere congratulations to Brandon Medical. The competition was extremely tough and it is a fantastic achievement to have come this far.

“Brandon Medical and the 24 other country representatives will provide tough competition for the other quality businesses representing their own nations this year, and we wish them every success at the next stage.”

Brandon Medical will now compete for a Ruban d’Honneur in the next round of the competition.

Final category award winners will be announced in Paris on November 16.
