Breaking News: BAE Systems to axe 450 Yorkshire jobs

BAE SYSTEMS is to shed 450 jobs in Yorkshire, it was revealed today.
A total of 600 jobs are being cut between the aerospace giant's Brough plant, near Hull, and Woodford site, near Manchester.
The factories house part of the company's Military Air Solutions business which employs around 10,500 people on five key military aircraft programmes, including the Typhoon, Nimrod, Hawk and the Joint Strike Fighter.
Trade union Unite said it would resist compulsory redundancies among the 450 job losses at Brough, East Yorkshire, home of the Hawk aircraft, and 134 job cuts at Woodford, the home of Nimrod.
National officer Bernie Hamilton said: “We have known for some time that we had a challenge on our hands at both sites due to the completion and delivery of current orders for the Fast Jet Trainer and the completion of work cycles at Woodford.
“In the long term it is imperative that the aerospace industry and the UK Government reaches agreement to safeguard the UK's large fixed wing capability for future generations.”
BAE's Military Air Solutions operations are carried out at four sites around the the UK, with Brough the company's centre of excellence for structural testing. The site employs 2,000 staff.
The defence giant lost out on a key contract to supply aircraft to the United Arab Emirates last October and the deal to build 35 Hawk 128 Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft would have secured the immediate future of the Brough site.
BAE is the world's third largest defence and aerospace company, with 96,000 employees worldwide.
