‘Jobs crisis’ faces region

ALMOST 70,000 jobs need to be created in Yorkshire’s towns and cities in order for their economies to survive, new research has revealed.

The report by the Centre for Cities thinktank has claimed that 69,500 jobs nees to be created just to raise levels to the national average.

Places hit include Barnsley, Bradford, Doncaster and Huddersfield, although Wakefield and York have attracted new business.

The research revealed that Hull and Sheffield have a deficit of 20,000 jobs each to make up.

While the new coalition government makes heavy public sector cuts, support must be given to areas where businesses are already adding private sector jobs, Centre for Cities said.
