Millions to tackle business crime

A £4.2m scheme to cut crime against small and medium sized businesses has been launched in Yorkshire.

The initiative is a partnership between the crime prevention charity People United Against Crime and the region’s four police forces.

It is being funded by £2m from the police and a further £2.2m from the European Regional Development Fund which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Communities Minister Baroness Hanham said: “It is important that businesses are free to grow and develop allowing the skilled workforce to create the wealth and jobs on which the economy depends. This funding will mean practical support can be given to reducing crime which hinders their progress.”

The project will see local businesses offered advice on how to cut the risk of crime including a survey of the premises and the ICT used by companies.

David Ransom, chief executive of People United Against Crime, said: “We know from our previous work with small businesses how disruptive crime can be and the negative effect it has on business confidence.

“We are delighted that the funders have had the vision to see the connection between security and economic growth and prosperity. This is a ground breaking project that marks the Yorkshire and Humber region as a safe place to invest and do business.”
