Event held to boost region’s business links with China

YORKSHIRE businesses will be encouraged to forge stronger business links with China at a major event being held in London tomorrow.

The Yorkshire Society is hosting the Yorkshire in the City project, which takes place at the Guildhall, on June 19.

Key speakers will include former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, and Minister for the Region Rosie Winterton, and representation from China with Zhang Lirong, the Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

Yorkshire Society chairman Keith Madeley said that he hoped the event would become one of the most significant in the annual business calendar with future events focusing on different countries, such as India.

Businessmen and women from Yorkshire and the capital and international guests who are looking for business opportunities in the region are all invited to attend.

Event spokeswoman Sharon Jandu said: “The event will be the first step in building long-term relationships between Yorkshire and Chinese businesses in order to develop mutual trade opportunities.”

Sponsored by Yorkshire Forward and UK Coal, the event will feature an afternoon seminar with a programme of speakers followed by a networking drinks reception and then dinner.

Other speakers will be the chief executive of UK Coal, Jon Lloyd, Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks and Professor Alan Barrell, the entrepreneur in residence at Cambridge University.

The central theme will be how the knowledge gained from old industries can be capitalised on in China.
