Family owned funeral directors expands into Wetherby

FAMILY owned funeral directors G E Hartley & Son has opened its third funeral home in Wetherby.
The Leeds-based firm, which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary, spent months looking for suitable premises before securing a town centre site next to St James Church.
As well as a funeral home, the funeral directors have included a Chapel of Rest and other ancillary facilities.
Stewart Hartley, who last year became the seventh generation of the Hartley family to enter the business, said that he recognised a gap in the market for an independent funeral director in his home town.
“We now have an excellent location which complements our other two offices from which we can serve Wetherby, Harrogate and surrounding areas,” he added.
Since 1964, G E Hartley has been run by Ken Hartley and his wife Kathleen until son Stewart decided to leave his print industry career to work for the family firm.
Under Mr Hartley senior’s guidance the business has successfully expanded from its original Thorner site and in 1995 an office and Chapel of Rest was added in Garforth. The firm currently employs six people.
