Yorkshire Manufacturing 2012: Optare back in profit

BUS manufacturer Optare broke back into EBITDA profit during the summer, chief executive Jim Sumner has revealed.

The confirmation Optare made a profit in July represents a siginficant landmark in the turnaround of the Sherburn-based business where Indian firm Ashok Leyland became majority shareholder earlier this year.

“Since then market registrations in the UK are up 50% from January to September, compared to last year and the export business is up substantially – something Ashokhas really helped with in terms of tender opportunities,” said Mr Sumner.

He talks in more detail about Optare’s turnaround in the new supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com, Yorkshire Manufacturing 2012, in partnership with Deloitte and DLA Piper.

Other success stories featured in the supplement include Allied Glass which is expected to record turnover above £100m this year, an increase of 28% in three years.

Steve O’Hare, head of majority shareholder Equistone Partners Europe in the North, said: “The management team have done an excellent job in positioning the business at the front of premium glass manufacturing with the market for premium spirits expected to remain strong in its growth.”
