York sets out market vision

YORK’S Newgate Market could be given a facelift using cash from the City Council’s £28.5m Economic Infrastructure Fund.

The council is asking for views on how the market could be made more attractive to visitors and a wider range of businesses.

Ideas on the table include extended trading hours and evening markets as the authority looks at ways of better linking it with the rest of the city’s retail offer.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “York’s market has operated for many hundreds of years and is part of the city centre’s commercial success.

“Taking part in the consultation will help secure its future and I urge people to come along and give their views.”

The council created the Economic Infrastructure Fund earlier this year to support projects that could help grow the city’s economy.

An exhibition on the council’s plans will be open every at Newgate Market this week.
