‘Double First’ for Shepherd Construction

SHEPHERD Construction has landed a ‘double first’ having secured £13m of work in Oxford city centre and on London’s Oxford Street.

Both contracts involve the development of retail space: a £9m mixed-use development on behalf of the Cooperative Insurance Society, and a £4m expansion of the Clarendon Centre in Oxford’s Cornmarket Street on behalf of Lothbury Investment Management.

The London contract will see the development of 149-151 Oxford Street and 59 Berwick Street into retail, office and residential space. The 64-week programme is due to begin in November.

The Oxford project will expand 100,000 sq ft of retail space at the Clarendon Centre by 10%.

As part of the work Shepherd Construction will demolish one of the existing blocks and build 50,376 sq ft of new units, increasing the space on offer by 12,465 sq ft. The work is scheduled to complete in October 2013.

Mark Tant, York-based Shepherd Construction’s regional managing director, said: “We’re delighted to have won these projects as they once again show our ability to deliver cost effective solutions within an incredibly competitive environment.

“It also further cements our reputation within the retail sector, particularly after the successful delivery of Trinity Walk shopping centre in Wakefield, a project that Shepherd not only helped restart after it went into administration but then also worked with a new client to successfully complete the work within an ambitious timescale.”

Shepherd Construction opened a London office in 2011.
