Sheffield City Region 2012: More than manufacturing

A RESEARCH hub for the digital industries modelled on the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is one of the ideas being put forward as the Sheffield City Region looks to develop key sectors.

The Local Enterprise Partnership has identified low carbon industries, creative and digital and healthcare as sectors that could fuel growth in the city region alongside advanced manufacturing.

Property and construction, retail and sport, leisure and tourism are also seen as having potential to create jobs.

The LEP has created seven ‘sector groups’ bringing together the business people, academics and public sector involved in each industry to generate ideas and offer advice.

A new free supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com, in partnership with Barclays and Sheffield Hallam University, looks at developments in these key sectors in more detail

Mike Holcombe, a specialist in software development at the University of Sheffield, leads the creative and digital industries sector group.

“We are looking at the AMRC as a very successful exercise. The universities are looking to do something similar in the digital research area,” he said.

The aim is to set up an Advanced Digital Research Institute in the next year that will become a sustainable, self funding entity within three years.
