Sheffield City Region 2012: Improving skills

IMPROVING skills at all levels is the focus of a major push in the Sheffield City Region.

Sheffield Hallam University is a partner in the City Region Leadership Programme that brings together public sector managers to share expertise and experiences.

The programme was originally a response to the funding cuts facing the public sector but now plans are being developed to encourage participation from the private and charitable sectors.

Stephanie Sturges, programme leader at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “This pioneering programme will help the Sheffield City Region face the challenges ahead through a teamwork approach rather than each individual organisation struggling alone.”

The City Region Leadership Programme is considered in more detail in Sheffield City Region 2012 – Strong foundations for growth, a new free supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with Barclays and Sheffield Hallam University.

Barclays is investing in skills in Yorkshire through the bank’s £20m apprenticeship programme where recruitment is focused on aptitude rather than qualifications.

Chris Forrest, head of Yorkshire & Lincolnshire at Barclays, said: “We are at the forefront of setting up service apprenticeships. We are hopeful that Sheffield will benefit from that in the next few months.”
