Goldenfry tees off with Sweetspot

A RANGE of nutrition food products for the golf market is ready for expansion after its founder formed a joint venture with a Yorkshire-based food manufacturer.

Northumberland food firm NewLeaf has teamed up with Wetherby-based Goldenfry Foods to develop its Sweetspot brand throughout the world of golf.

Since its launch last March, the golf nutrition product has grown rapidly and is now sold in 330 golf clubs across the UK. It also sponsors golf events including the Europro Tour.

The range includes flavoured slow-release stamina bars and quick-boost beans, and has been developed specifically for golfers to help sustain their energy for the duration of their round of golf.

Goldenfry, known for making gravy products for UK supermarkets, is a family business which started life as a single independent fish and chip shop in Wetherby in the 1960s.

It has now grown to employ 200 people at a purpose-built factory in the town.

Rob Mullen, whose NewLeaf business has previously struck deals with retailers including Harvey Nichols for other products in its portfolio, said the joint venture holds significant potential for Sweetspot.

“Golf as a sport has transformed in the past ten years – professional golfers are now athletes, dedicated to fitness and nutrition so they can sustain top performance throughout their whole round of golf,” he said.

“As such, the golf products market needed to change, and Sweetspot is at the forefront of that. We have made huge progress in only our first year, during which Sweetspot has seen significant growth in the UK market, and myself and the NewLeaf team are very excited about the potential of the partnership with Goldenfry.

“They are a very significant name in the UK’s food market, and we are pleased to have their support and weight behind us in making Sweetspot the leading global brand in golf nutrition.”

Peter Turrill, managing director of Goldenfry Foods, said: “We recognise the tremendous potential of the Sweetspot brand, and we are really looking forward to being part of working with Rob and the team to build the brand further.”

Law firm Sintons handled the legal work on the joint venture on behalf of Mr Mullen led by Adrian Dye, associate in the commercial group.

James Cook, of Leeds and Bradford-based law firm Gordons, advised Goldenfry Foods.
