Awards look for property finest

ORGANISERS of a high profile property awards are to launch the search for the best in the region’s built and natural environments.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) will launch the 2009 Pro Yorkshire Awards with an event at the Icon Business Centre in Leeds. The former Innovate Green was the proud winners of the Sustainability Award 2008.

The event will be held on September 4 providing guests with an opportunity to meet key individuals involved with the awards and listen to a presentation by the winning project team from Icon.

Judges will be looking for leading examples of best practice in Yorkshire and the Humber under the following eight award categories: Building Conservation, Regeneration, Sustainability, Community Benefit, Commercial, Residential, Tourism & Leisure, Innovation & Design and Project of the Year 2009.

Colin Harrop, chairman of RICS Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “This is the eighth year we will be running the awards and the standard of projects we’ve seen in previous years has been incredibly high. We predict it will be even more diverse and better quality this year having seen some of the excellent schemes currently underway in the region.

“Yorkshire and Humber had the second highest number of entries in the country last year, and we hope to gain a similar amount, if not more, this time round. The awards highlight the vital role chartered surveyors and other skilled specialists play in our society – it’s important to recognise that behind every successful development there is a team of highly talented and trained individuals.”

The judging panel will be made up of a mixture of property professionals from various disciplines and backgrounds across Yorkshire and the Humber.

The winning entries in four of the categories – Building Conservation, Community Benefit, Regeneration and Sustainability – will automatically go through to the international RICS Awards, which will be held in London, to compete against some of the best projects in the world.

In addition to the Icon Business Centre scooping the Sustainability Award, last year’s winners also included Breathing Space in Rotherham; YHA Whitby; Victoria Mills in Bradford; The Glassworks Pot House in Barnsley; St Stephens in Hull; Expressive Arts Building in Hull; and Wentworth Castle Gardens and Stainborough Park.
