Acorn Dairy powers ahead with new turbine

ORGANIC farming business Acorn Dairy has installed a 500 kilowatt wind turbine to expand its green ethos.

Acorn Dairy supplies to Bradford supermarket giant Morrisons, among other retailers, and provides its produce to farms across North Yorkshire. The company, which has a Yorkshire base near Leyburn in Wensleydale, has installed the turbine in its headquarters in Darlington.

The dairy, which produces bottle and retail milk from their own cows, has secured funding from The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in Leeds to support the installation.

The 67m turbine generates sufficient energy to fulfil all the power requirements of the dairy and any spare electricity is exported to the national grid.

Mark Heyes, business development director at RBS in Leeds, said: “The production of renewable energy fits in perfectly with Acorn Dairy’s organic farming principles and was a natural step forward for the business.”
