Historic Crucible Works brought back to life

YORKSHIRE building conservation and restoration specialists William Anelay has completed a major project at The Crucible Works in Sheffield.

The project, which lasted 29 weeks, involved extensive fabric repairs to make the building watertight and to prevent further deterioration at the last surviving steel crucible workshop in the world.

Works included conservation of the roofing structures, major brickwork repairs and re-pointing and re-building of six chimneystacks.

William Anelay has helped rescue Crucible Workshops from dereliction as part of a £7m regeneration project to help revitalise the steel industry in Sheffield.

William Anelay’s managing director Vernon Carter, said: “The Crucible Works is of major importance to our industrial heritage. William Anelay is proud to have played a small part in preserving the building’s future”.

Established in 1747, William Anelay operates out of bases in York and Manchester with around 90 staff and an annual turnover in 2009 of £17m.
