Vote for the winners of the Business Masters Innovator and Grit awards

YORKSHIRE firms that have innovated and shown the gritty resolve to succeed are being celebrated in the TheBusinessDesk.com Masters Awards.

The Yorkshire Grit award is for the firm that has triumphed against the odds or bucked the economic downturn to achieve success and the three on the shortlist here are textile business Abraham Moon & Sons which has continued to grow despite strong competition from China.

The firm, which supplies retail giants like Marks & Spencer, is unique in being a ‘vertical mill’ with dyeing, blending, carding, spinning, weaving and finishing all taking place on one site.

Family-owned cleaning and hygiene business Disposables UK was born out of the entrepreneurial spirit and vision of the late Trevor Storer and is now run by his widow Diane, its chairman.

The Meltham company now has a £16m turnover with pre-tax profits of £800,000 and was selected as a supplier for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of global competitors.

Leeds-based Gregory Property Group has been shortlisted for delivering the £40m Broad Street Plaza in Halifax in the teeth of the economic downturn and property slump.

The Innovator category includes the Biorenewables Development Centre in York which helps regional companies to explore business opportunities around the use of biorenewable raw materials.

Leeds-based The Test People was founded five years ago and now has turnover of almost £6m and provides one of the most innovative testing services for IT, cloud and mobile technology in the UK.

Also shortlisted is Leeds-based element14 – the company behind the credit card-sized computer Raspberry Pi.In the last year more than one million have been sold and production has been moved from China to the UK
