Harrison Spinks to boost business with new division

LUXURY bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks is opening a new division to manufacture innovative luxury cot mattresses and nursery comfort items.

The Leeds-based manufacturer will launch its nursery comfort division under the Silver Cross brand in October. It said it has invested a “significant amount” in this new area and is confident it will expand the business.

The new range has been co-designed with Nick Paxton, group chief executive of British manufacturer Silver Cross.

According to Harrison Spinks, which employs 280 staff and has a £25m turnover, the baby spring innovation is completely unique to the nursery market. These miniature pocket springs cannot be found in any other nursery comfort product due to the patented nature of the technology.

Simon Spinks, managing director of Harrison Spinks, said: “We are confident we are moving into a new and untapped market and we believe it will contribute further to the success and growth of the business.

“Harrison Spinks has invested a significant amount in the new division and we expect to employ a significant number of additional people over the next five years – exact numbers are hard to pin down, but we will be recruiting externally and providing jobs to the local region.

“The existing cot mattress market lacks innovation, particularly from a proven support and comfort perspective which is why I have designed this range with Nick Paxton of Silver Cross who is an expert in baby comfort and a very accomplished design engineer.

“Our high density baby spring technology has been developed specifically for infants to ensure that they start sleep the right way. We understand the benefits from sleeping on a good mattress for adults, so it makes perfect sense that the same logic is applied for babies, after all sleep is vitally important for a baby’s development.”

Last month, the 173-year-old company said it has ambitious plans to grow the business and earlier this year, it celebrated a double win in the annual Queen’s Awards for Enterprise after being awarded in the innovation and sustainable development categories.
