Dormer wants to say thanks for the memories

IT began life in Yorkshire just before the First World War but has grown to become part of an international empire.
Now Dormer Tools is calling on former employees to come forward with any company memorabilia, such as photographs and videos, as the company prepares to move to a multi-million pound facility.
The company has already discovered a variety of archive footage of its old Sommerfield Street site in Sheffield, but is keen to gain more archive material which it is to upload onto its website for visitors to explore.
Dormer has grown to become part of the Swedish-based Sandvik Group and has developed from a traditional cutting tool manufacturer into one of the world’s largest producers of solid carbide and high speed steel cutting tools.
It has operations in more than 40 countries worldwide and employs about 1,300 people.
The company is to move into the Advanced Manufacturing Park, between Rotherham and Sheffield.
John O’Donoghue, general manager of Dormer Tools UK, said: “We are appealing to anybody in the region who may have worked for Dormer to come forward with any memorabilia related to the company or the old site at Sommerfield Street.
“Dormer began as a small company in Sheffield in 1913, so there must be hundreds of people all over the region who have either worked for the company or known somebody who has. It’s played a huge part in a lot of people’s lives and a lot of memories have been made here.”
