York scheme gets go-ahead

PLANNING permission has been granted for the redevelopment of a 19 acre former airfield in York.

Harrogate-based property development and investment company, Wilton Developments, submitted a planning appeal for the site on Clifton Moor in March 2008 on behalf of the site’s owners, Water Lane Limited.

Following a public enquiry, permission has now been granted for a mixture of residential and employment uses.

The former grain stores and RAF buildings are located adjacent to a residential community on the southern edge of the established Clifton Moor retail and business park.

Jason Stowe, development director for Wilton Developments, said: “The scheme will deliver a sustainable mixture of uses, including homes and employment opportunities. We are delighted with the Planning Inspectorate’s decision. It was disappointing that we had to move to appeal, at great expense, but the decision shows that common sense has prevailed and we look forward to working closely with the City of York council on the forthcoming reserved matters application.”

The site was originally developed in the Second World War as an ancillary site to the Clifton Airfield (RAF York) to service and repair Halifax Bombers in association with nearby Clifton Airfield.

The site was then briefly used by the MOD for the maintenance of military vehicles and from 1980 until its sale in 2005 was used by the Intervention Board for the storage of grain.

Wilton Developments is active in the north of England and is primarily interested in development opportunities in the commercial and residential sectors.
