FORMER South Africa President and joint Nobel Peace Prize winner with Nelson Mandela, F.W. de Klerk, will headline this year’s Yorkshire International Business Convention (YIBC).

Mr de Klerk brings an international dimension to what is already an eye-catching line-up of speakers at the event, which will be held at The Spa in Bridlington on June 6.

He joins BBC’s Robert Peston, Bank of Dave star David Fishwick, entrepreneur Celia Gates and inventor Richard Noble in the line-up.

Mike Firth, founder of YIBC, said: “The excitement is increasing by the day ahead and I can’t wait to welcome everyone, once again, to The Spa in Bridlington. Last year’s event attracted a record audience and we are on course for another sell-out – we had already sold 500 tickets before announcing F.W. de Klerk as the headline speaker.”

A SPECIALIST dementia care home has opened for business this month, following the completion of a 14 month building project by QSP Construction.

The £1.7m Glen Nursing Home in Baildon includes 56 single en-suite bedrooms and state-of-the-art facilities such as reminiscence pods, a sensory room, cinema and hairdressing salon.

The Glen is the latest in a series of regional building projects won by Bingley-based QSP Construction and was built for was built for The Glen Nursing Home Ltd whose owners – The Holt family – also own and operate Kingston Nursing Home in Roundhay, Leeds.

QSP’s current project portfolio also includes a new church and guest wing at Stanbrook Abbey near Thirsk (£2.5m), eleven bespoke homes in Ranmoor, Sheffield (£2.8m) and a new £750,000 visitor centre at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet near Sheffield.

SECERNA, a firm of Patent and Trade Mark attorneys headquartered in York, has opened a new office.
 
The firm has expanded into Newcastle.

Jason Boakes, chairman, said: “The north east of England has a strong tradition of innovation in engineering and life sciences however we are now seeing growing levels of activity in other high-tech sectors including software, electronics and computing technologies.

“We have expanded rapidly since being established in 2011 and our growing team complements this technology mix very well. It therefore made sense for our next move to be expansion into the north east.”

Secerna’s Newcastle office will be led by Dan Mercer, an experienced attorney specialising in software, electronics and telecoms.

TONG High School in Bradford has won the schools category of February 2014’s Micro-Tyco challenge mentored by staff from the Deloitte Leeds office and school staff.

The school was also third in the overall competition having generated £3,657.06 from a £1 investment from the WildHearts charity.

Teams that enter Micro-Tyco receive £1 in seed capital which they are challenged to turn into as much money as possible, using any legal means, in just four weeks.  The scheme encourages team work and entrepreneurial spirit, with funds invested in micro-finance for micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Mike Jackson, WildHearts Founder and Micro-Tyco creator visited the school last Thursday to present the trophy and give an inspirational talk to the students.
