Thirsk firm puts best foot forward

A NORTH Yorkshire company has had one of its specialist products nominated for a prestigious industry award.

Thirsk-based Hygicare anti-bacterial boot liner has been shortlisted in the best new product category in the annual awards of the Society of Food Hygiene and Technology.

The awards will be presented at the Society’s Annual Lecture at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel in London on November 20th.

Tony Fawcett, Hygicare’s managing director, said: “I am delighted that we have been put forward for this award.

“The Anti-Bac Boot Liner has been an incredible success story for the company this year. It’s a great compliment to be recognised by the Society in this way. We’re now keeping our fingers crossed that we can bring the award home to Yorkshire”

The anti-bac boot liner is designed to provide extreme foot hygiene and comfort and is made from a material which has a unique silver thread running through it.

Silver has hygienic and therapeutic properties, helps to fight odour and is thermally dynamic, meaning that the liners help to keep feet warm in the cold and cool in warm conditions, as well as being fully washable. The footwear range also includes shoes and wellington boots.

“These days everyone is realising the importance of avoiding cross-infection, especially in hospitals and food environments,” added Mr Fawcett.

“We developed Hygi footwear to meet this growing need and I’m pleased to say that it’s really taken off.”

Despite the current downturn in the economy Hygicare’s 2008 sales are around 30% up on last year due to demand for recently introduced products particularly for the food sector.
