Yorkshire Manufacturing: Support for a sustainable supply chain

A £300,000 supply chain pilot programme has been set up to help SME manufacturers in Hull and the Humber to access larger company supply chains in the engineering, food, chemical and medical sectors.

The Humber Supply Chain Programme, funded by the Regional Growth Fund – Wave 2 Growth Hubs Programme, will be delivered by the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) and will look to create 60 jobs and safeguard a further 100 between now and March 2015.

MAS will work with larger manufacturers to perform an ‘opportunity analysis’ of their supply chains, identifying current requirements, mapping those opportunities and communicating them to local suppliers.

Alongside this, advisers will also be working with companies on creating long-term strategies and improving processes so they are able to meet the world-class standards expected by the larger tier one firms and OEMs.

David Caddle, area director for MAS, said: “We will work with larger manufacturers to identify the pain points in their existing supply chain and what those suppliers need to improve, such as by adopting a low energy policy.

“It’s about creating sustainability within the supplier so that it is able to continue supplying. We get them talking about how they can improve and then help them to improve, such as introducing KPIs for early alerts and so ensuring they deliver on time.”

Stephen Gregory, team leader for the MAS in Yorkshire and Humber, added: “The programme is all about forging stronger links, recognising the benefits of local supply and then ensuring our firms are in a position to meet quality and volume demands.”
