Engineering firm unlocks global potential

LEEDS-based engineering firm Pickersgill-Kaye is hoping to capture the Asian market after winning an order to supply Malaysian police stations with its high security cell door locks.

The company said that although the initial quantities were small it is well placed to win new business as the Malaysian government carries out its programme to build 80 new police stations.

This latest success, secured against competition from a number of international companies, has helped boost Pickersgill-Kaye’s order book, which has risen to £1m of export orders so far this year.

The Kaye Class 1 cell lock is a heavy duty lock, which has been specifically designed for custodial doors.

It features a heavy duty, solid steel body and interchangeable 8 lever inner locking unit as well as an anti-ligature design external handle assembly.

Company sales manager Harry Griffiths said: “Locks from several companies were considered for this project and had to be formally assessed by the Malaysian authorities.

“Quite simply the Kaye lock was selected after careful consideration as it was the best available to meet the challenging conditions it will be used in.”

He added: “This is the second year of a five year development programme in Malaysia and we are confident that we will continue to win business throughout this period. We have further orders for 50 locks which will be dispatched soon, and are already in discussions for additional orders through into next year.”

Mr Griffiths said that there was the potential to secure orders in other countries across Asia and that discussion with police and prison authorities were also taking place in Europe and the Middle East.
