Architect appointed to flagship university development

SHEFFIELD-based architect Race Cottam Associates has been selected by the University of York as lead designer for a new flagship teaching building at the centre of its Heslington West campus.

The 4000 sq m building will provide a new 350 seat lecture theatre as well as 26 seminar rooms and social learning space, based around an internal street.

“We are really pleased to have secured this fantastic new scheme for the University of York,” says director David Cottam. “The University is a new client for us, and one which we have been keen to work with for a long time. The teaching building offers the opportunity for an exciting design and we are really looking forward to developing our ideas with the university stakeholders.”

The scheme needs to be delivered to a tight programme, with completion earmarked for August 2016.

Race Cottam has established a strong reputation within the higher education sector, with completed schemes for Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Derby and the University of Sheffield.

The company is currently acting as masterplanning architect for Leeds Beckett University, where it has designed and completed a number of schemes on both the city and Headingley campuses.
