Ex-council chief joins Deloitte

THE former chief executive of Bradford City Council has joined business advisory firm Deloitte.

Tony Reeves, who was also deputy chief executive of Wakefield Council, joins the senior team at Deloitte as a partner.

The firm said the investment in the local government team demonstrates a clear commitment to its public sector practice.

Based in Leeds, but operating nationally for Deloitte, Reeves will focus on supporting councils to reposition and transform services in light of continuing austerity and increasing demands on social care from an ageing society.

He said: “I have been directly involved in all aspects of strategy and policy development in local government for the past 20 years, and I’m looking forward to bringing that experience to bear for Deloitte’s local government clients across the UK.”

Reeves will bring together skilled and experienced professionals from across the firm to tailor solutions to the individual needs of local government clients. He will also work with Deloitte’s health care specialists to support health and social care integration. Six years ago the firm invested in this sector, creating a centre of excellence for healthcare in the North, led by Paul Thomson.

Martin Jenkins, practice senior partner for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “The pace of change in the public sector, and especially local government, requires innovative solutions to the challenges the sector is facing. Tony has a deep understanding of the challenges and will be able to deliver different outcomes using the full capability of the firm’s expertise.”

As chief executive of Bradford City Council for the past eight years, Reeves had overall responsibility for the council’s £1.5bn turnover and its 20,000 employees.

He led the transformation programme to reposition the authority in the face of huge reductions in its budget, delivering £180m of annual savings with well-developed plans for further savings and improved performance in many areas.

Paul Thomson, Deloitte partner and public sector lead for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “Tony has an outstanding track record for driving service improvements and delivering transformational change through innovation and partnering. He has delivered major cost reduction programmes and has worked with a range of private sector partners to deliver economic regeneration.”
