Schoolchildren witness how science transfers to the workplace

SCHOOLCHILDREN from across the Humber region have been discovering for themselves how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) can be applied in the workplace.
The Humberside Engineering Training Association ran a “STEM in Action” day with and some of its partner businesses earlier this month.
Children had opportunity to take part in fun activities including making bubble-bath and examining fingerprints forensically.
Iain Elliott, chief executive of HETA, said that the serious message behind the day was the importance of introducing young people to the possibilities of technical careers.
He said: “We’ve been doing these events for a few years now and talking to the teachers today it seems as popular as ever.
“Somebody has to take the lead for educating young people about science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.
“Working with schools in the area, HETA has a big part to play in educating children about this at the earliest age we can.”
Among the businesses which supported HETA in the two-day event held at Hull’s KC Stadium were Croda Europe, which presented workshops on how to make bubble-bath, and Pulse CSI, which demonstrated forensic science techniques.
