Le Tour Yorkshire: See how the analysts worked out the economic impact of 3.3m spectators

THE benefits to Yorkshire of hosting the Grand Départ this summer are in many ways incalculable, but analysts SPA Future Thinking have produced a report that has sought to do just that.

Yorkshire saw the majority of the economic benefit of the Tour de France’s three UK stages, generating £102m, while stage three hosts Cambridge, Essex and London shared £30.5m.

The overwhelming economic impact was, understandably, generated by direct visitor spending over the weekend of July 5-6:

This infographic, produced by SPA Future Thinking and reproduced in the report Three Inspirational Days, illustrates the contributions of various elements to the total economic impact figure:

In addition, there was £7.5m attributed to the Yorkshire Festival and a further £1.8m from the teams, media, volunteers and entourage that followed the event.

The remaining amount, which is slightly above £5m, was from the impact of Government spending on local suppliers in Yorkshire.

Two elements have not been included in the total impact figure – spending by local residents in watching the event and the economic benefits that were generated by the International Festival of Business. The impact of the two-day business event is still being calculated and will be published at a later date.
