DELOITTE’S senior partner in Leeds, Martin Jenkins, is to walk the 110-mile Cleveland Way to raise money for a new Maggie’s Centre.
The charity has recently applied for planning permission for a new Centre which will be built adjacent to the Leeds Cancer Centre, in the Bexley Wing, at St James’s University Hospital.
His challenge begins a week on Saturday and will see him walk 110 miles through both heather moorland and coastal paths to raise vital funds for the planned new Maggie’s Yorkshire Centre.
He will be joined for sections of the walk by a number of senior figures from the local business community including Andrew Cope, Laurence Walker, Garry Wilson and Darren Forshaw.
Mr Jenkins said: “I am doing this walk to raise awareness of our campaign for Maggie’s Yorkshire particularly amongst the business community from whom we will be seeking support and also raising funds through direct sponsorship. With the increasing number of people touched by cancer in the region and the fantastic medical support currently provided by the Leeds Cancer Centre, a Maggie’s Centre will have a significant and lasting legacy for people living with cancer in Yorkshire.”
Maggie’s relies on voluntary donations to support and grow its network of Centres and to develop its unique, high quality programme of support. Maggie’s Yorkshire needs £5m to create the centre with money raised entirely from voluntary donations.

Workers are being urged to leave their desks behind at lunchtime and join Heart Research UK’s Leeds Healthy Heart Corporate Walk on July 17.
The Yorkshire-based charity has set up healthy heart activities at various hubs along the route to encourage fitness, educate people about health and diet and the importance of taking a proper active break at lunchtime.
Activities will take place in Park Square, City Square, Lands Lane, Briggate and in front of the Leeds Art Gallery.
“We are all guilty of working through our lunch, staying late and generally not moving enough whilst at work,” said Heart Research UK’s head of fundraising, Fran Shilton. “This is a great opportunity to take part in a healthy lunch break and make a positive effort to change the sedentary life you may lead at work.
“By taking a break from your desk you’ll be helping us with major research into heart disease and increase your health and fitness.”
The walk begins at 12 noon until approximately 2pm and the route will take the walker on a short circuit within the city centre.
Among those already signed up are Blacks Solicitors in Leeds, who will have a number of staff taking part.
