Yorkshire corporate deals review in association with Gordons

By Edward Nuttman, solicitor, Yorkshire law firm Gordons
NOVEMBER’S largest deal has not yet been concluded. It is the agreement in principle for Marriott International to buy Starwood Hotels for £8bn which will see the creation of the world’s biggest hotel company.
This global deal also has important implications for the Yorkshire region, as several well-known hotels in the area are included in the contract, such as the Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel, the York Marriott Hotel and the Leeds Marriott Hotel. The deal shows the level of investment in the hotel sector which looks set to end the year in a very strong position.
In fact, 2015 has been a year of growth for many – a trend that is most obviously illustrated in the upturn in the recruitment industry.
Sheffield-based Nicholas Associates Group purchase of Newcastle’s XL Graduate Placement for an undisclosed sum in November is a reflection of this growth, with the vendors stating the purchase will “quite simply turbocharge XL’s growth plans.”
In the 2013-14 financial year the recruitment industry surged past the pre-financial crisis peak as annual turnover reached £28.7bn. Since then strong growth has continued and is expected to rise a further 18 per cent by April 2016. It stands to reason that a more robust economy creates more movement as employers and employees alike become more confident – all of which is good news for the recruitment industry.
It will be interesting to see whether the growth in the industry leads to more acquisitions by recruitment businesses over the next 12 months as they seek to keep up with demand.
