Hotel with £2.5m price tag bought up in Splendid deal

A LEEDS hotel inspired by jazz musician Duke Ellington has been snapped up by the Splendid Hospitality Group, as it looks to start 2016 off with a bang.

The New Ellington Hotel, which had a price tag of £2.5m when it was launched to market, has been added to the group’s portfolio.

The 34-bedroom boutique hotel is named for jazz musician Duke Ellington, who performed in the city in the 1958 Leeds centenary music festival.

Splendid owns Yorkshire’s only 5 star hotel, the Grand Hotel and Spa in York, which it is currently refurbishing in a £15m redevelopment, after acquiring a neighbouring building to expand.

The group also owns the 101-bedroom Hotel Indigo York, as well as the Holiday Inn Express Leeds East, and Holiday Inn Express York.

Stuart Bailey, chief executive of the Splendid Hospitality Group says: “We are delighted to acquire the New Ellington Hotel which enhances our existing collection, giving us a stronger accommodation proposition in the region.

“This boutique hotel is ideally located for both the business and leisure traveller and we look forward to welcoming guests to the hotel.”

Colliers advised the vendor, RBS, in the sale.

On the sale Julian Troup, Head of UK Hotels, Colliers International, said: “The New Ellington has a reputation for its discreet location and is regularly used by musicians and artists as a bolthole following performances in Leeds. We received a great deal of interest for the hotel and Splendid Hospitality Group’s strong track record for developing and enhancing boutique hotels proved to be a good match for New Ellington.”
