Year Ahead 2016: Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport

Tony Hallwood, aviation development director, Leeds Bradford Airport

What didn’t happen in 2015 that was expected to?

The price of fuel was expected to rise after its dramatic decline in late 2014 however its continued fall has provided airlines with the opportunity to keep fares competitive, attractive and at a level that stimulate demand.

What should we expect to see in 2016?

– Continuing low fuel prices which will continue to deliver attractive airline fares.
– Increased demand for both business and leisure travel.
– Introduction of new services, frequencies and airlines at LBA !

What would be a sign that things are going well?

– Increase in passenger figures at LBA.
– Travellers deciding to take more short breaks as well as their main summer break.
– Interest rate rise.
– Businesses increasing their flying needs as they meet and secure new overseas business for the region.

What would be a sign that things are going badly?

Declining sales and investment decisions delayed.

What do you want to see happen in 2016?

Agreement to deliver improved road access to LBA and cross regional support to secure a rail link to Leeds Bradford as part of improving Leeds City regions transport infrastructure prior to arrival of HS2.

Government approval of the 3rd runway at Heathrow.

Lowering of APD (airport passenger duty) levied by the UK government. UK travellers presently pay the highest aviation taxes in Europe and APD is a strong disincentive to travel to the UK by foreign nationals.

Who or what do you predict will have a successful year?

The travel and package holiday business will continue to grow and I expect LBA to deliver another record year in terms of passenger numbers. I predict Bradford City will be promoted to the Championship and Leeds Rhinos to win the World Club Challenge.

Who or what is most at risk/faces a difficult year?

Young people who have a mortgage are likely to suffer an increase in their repayment costs as interest rate rises take effect.

What are you most looking forward to in 2016?

Taking my second cruise in the Med with my wife and visiting LBA’s new destinations of Cork and Guernsey for a weekend break with my family.

What are your words of wisdom for the year ahead?

– Believe in yourself and have faith in your abilities.
– Encourage peace and goodwill to all men.
