£80m Tower Works site given go-ahead

TOWER WORKS, on Leeds’ South Bank is set to move ahead.

Developers Carillion applied for planning for the site in November. It has now been approved by Leeds City Council.

The project will see the old industrial site turned into 90,000 sq ft of retail space.

As part of the plans, homes, offices, restaurants and retail units have been agreed.

Ten buildings will be constructed, including 160 residential units including townhouses, and 127,014 sq ft of office space.

A cinema and boutique brewery will transform the grade II-listed Engine House.

Tower Works, the site of T.R. Hardings pin factory, was erected in the mid-19th century to supply the textiles industry, It closed in 1978.

The Homes and Communities Agency chose Carillion to create the Tower Works space as a link between the city centre and Holbeck Urban Village.

Councillor James McKenna, chair of the city plans panel, said: “We are pleased to see plans to regenerate this historic part of Leeds moving forward.

“The redevelopment of the Tower Works site will create a dynamic new hub for businesses, residents, visitors and shoppers which will be a cornerstone in the regeneration of the whole area.

“Above all it is important to us to see this site protected and preserved as well as securing its future and maximising its enormous potential.”

Construction on Tower Works will begin in June 2016.
