“Multi-million” pound investment in shopping centre

A WEST YORKSHIRE shopping centre is set to benefit from plans to invest millions of pounds in its development.

Listed company NewRiver Retail acquired The Ridings Shopping Centre as part of a £108m Christmas shopping spree last year.

Based in Wakefield the site is set to undergo a multi-million pound investment following its sale.

It is one of a number of shopping centres in Yorkshire getting a rehaul this year, with Sheffield’s Meadowhall recently starting work on a £60m revamp.

The plans for The Ridings include “significant” works and cosmetic changes to all three levels of the centre, which counts anchor retailers such as BHS and Marks & Spencer alongside budget clothing chain Primark and local independents uch as Created in Yorkshire, Feather’s Confectionary and Artworld.

Eileen Holroyd, centre manager at The Ridings Shopping Centre commented: “It is with a great deal of pleasure that we can announce plans for a multi-million pound investment into The Ridings Shopping Centre.

“The injection of funds by our new owners NewRiver Retail will support a refreshed and improved retail mix alongside a stronger food and beverage offering.

“Discussions and planning are currently underway, but we will be sharing more details in the coming weeks.

“In the meantime, The Ridings alongside its new owners NewRiver, will continue to work closely with key stakeholders including the local authority and Trinity Walk. We also look forward to restoring pride in The Ridings and Wakefield city centre as a whole.”
