Wates to build 500 homes in Halifax regeneration deal

CONSTRUCTION firm Wates has been appointed lead developer of a 500-home regeneration project in Halifax.

The company’s affordable housing division Wates Living Space will build homes and amenities in Mixenden, Illingworth and Ovenden as part of the North Halifax Transformation Project.

Calderdale Council and housing association Pennine Housing will supply land for the development.

The contract marks the second Yorkshire urban regeneration win for Wates Living Space this year. In January, it announced a £5.4m deal with Sheffield City Council to refurbish 3,500 homes.

Calderdale Council said the Halifax regeneration deal includes a large Extra Care scheme, which provides properties for older or disabled people.

Cllr Jenny Lynn, cabinet member for skills and the environment at Calderdale Council, said work is already underway to boost the North Halifax area, which has a “strong sense of community”.

She said: “Now Wates Living Space Homes has been appointed as developer, we can continue to progress this exciting scheme, bringing new jobs, improved open space and good-quality housing and extra care facilities to North Halifax.”
