200 Northern jobs face the cut at RBS

AROUND 600 jobs are under threat as RBS looks to cut its services, according to Unite the Union.

18 bank closures are said to be leading to 217 job losses in the North of England, with a further 13 branch closures and 176 job losses in the Midlands, with the rest of the cuts being made London, according to City AM.

The bailed out bank is apparently looking at its phone and online channels, and moving away from the traditional high street branch model.

The opening hours at hundreds of branches will also be cut.

Lyn Turner, Unite’s regional officer said: “With job losses across the country and surviving branches on reduced hours, there’s no doubt this latest round of cuts will hurt the bank’s customers as well as our members,”

“With every branch closure Natwest is slamming its doors on another community, dangerously undermining the bank’s long-term future. Unite will consult with our members as we hold the bank to its promise to avoid compulsory redundancies.”

The 73% taxpayer-owned bank was bailed out £45bn during the recession years.

Earlier this week, Yorkshire Bank announced that it would be closing nine branches in the region , and a further 17 across the UK. Redundancies were not disclosed.
