London Stock exchange comes to Leeds

“HAVING access to various forms of finance is vital to UK economy,” according to the London Stock Exchange Group.
The LSEG are launching a two-day masterclass at Leeds Beckett University to help attendees understand the financial markets.
Normally held in London, the group has moved its masterclass to Leeds this year and will feature Martin Russell, owner of Russell & Associates, providers of financial and business education to institutions including Lloyds Bank, the Financial Times (FT) and the Bank of England, and course director of the FT ‘Introducing the City’ evening programme.
But what is the future of public markets like the LSE in the modern world when there are things like crowdfunding to raise funds and PR to raise awareness?
“Small and medium companies to access growth and equity capital throughout their lifecycle,” said Sarah Cadman, head of the LSEG’s UK academy, “Crowdfunding is prominents, and alongside public markets it will be an important tool, in a range of options.”
“The course is participative and practical in its nature and delegates will get in depth and direct understanding of the public markets.”
Leeds-based speakers as well as a range of LSE tutors range will introduce delegates to financial markets in an easy way
She said: “We’re keen to advance financial and capital markets skills in the UK and globally. It’s also a really good opportunity to reach the regions where there are a lot of listed businesses as well.”
“We’ve seen a strong pipeline from the Yorkshire region on the IPO front and more generally the range of companies from sectors and regions has been encouraging. Globally there has been a lull in IPO activity, but London has remained particularly strong compared to the American markets – we’ve remained open for business. “
With the 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain rankings, Ms Cadman said: “The idea is to highlight companies that are growing from around the UK and the way we do it is to employ independent research company to look into financials of each company.
“In this bigger list of firms, look at the way they outperform sector peers, we don’t just highlight trends or in the flash in the pan, but companies that might be planning to float in the future.”
Dr George Lodorfos, associate dean at Leeds Business School, Leeds Beckett University, commented: “We are excited to announce the launch of this new masterclass programme with London Stock Exchange Group Academy. This association with an iconic global brand will help us deliver comprehensive, competitive solutions that regional firms need.”
The ‘Understanding Financial Markets’ course will take place from Thursday 12 to Friday 13 May at the Professional Practice Suite within Leeds Beckett’s city centre Portland Building.
