Huge blaze at steelworks tackled by 50 firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Tata Steel facilities in Rotherham in the early hours of this morning to tackle a huge blaze.

Fire engines from Rotherham, Parkway, Central, Elm Lane, Edlington, Dearne, Birley Moor, Stocksbridge and Tankersley stations were in attendance, with 50 firefighters on hand. No reports of any injuries have surfaced.

The fire, which started at 1am, caused “several thousand” litres of oil to set alight. High volume pumps were set up to access water from an on site reservoir.

Residents on Aldwarke Lane were asked to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke n the area, and asked to stay away from the site.

By 4am the blaze had begun to subside, with two fire engines leaving the scene, although eight were still in attendance.

Crews quickly contained the blaze to one building, and by 7am, firefighters had left the scene.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once the fire has been fully extinguished and the scene has been made safe.”
