Meet the CEO who conducts job interviews at 6.30am

What are you doing at 6.30am? On a morning job, eating breakfast or still snoozing? Imagine walking into an interview at that time with the hope of doing well and securing the job. Chances are, you would panic and assume that you didn’t have enough time to prepare yourself or get into a focused zone. However, one CEO thinks that the crack of dawn is the best time for an interview.

The chief executive of football technology company Kyck, Mac Lackey, took to LinkedIn to explain why he believes an early interview is the best way to do the recruitment process – simply to see how people react to a 6.30am interview.

He said: “How you react to that challenge tells me a lot about not only your character, but also how you choose to handle situations that take you out of your comfort zone whatever that situation is.”

The Kyck founder found that people reacted differently to the situation. He said: “I’ve had people show up ready and excited at 6:25am to interview. I’ve had people show up late for a 6:30am interview. I’ve had people flat-out turn down that interview time. I’ve had people show up on time, but tell me how brutal it was getting there.”

Mr Lackey explained that the first thing to come out of potential candidate’s mouth is what the real challenge is. For example, if they apologise for how tired they look rather than explaining what they have learned about mornings and productivity, they may not be the type of worker you want in your office.

He revealed that the whole point of an early morning interview is to see how candidates react when they are out of their comfort zone. He said: “Are you talking about how frighteningly early it is or are you admitting this was a challenge, but only because you love your own morning routine you’ve spent years perfecting, sharing what you find works well for you in the morning?”

He added: “How you show up and the first thing out of your mouth when you do show up tell me about what you’re going to do when I’m not interviewing you, when you’re going to meet with our top investor and he just changed the meeting time on you.

“What you say and how you react say it all.”
