Esh Construction drives ahead with £5.8m civils contract

ESH Construction has secured a £5.8m contract from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for major road improvements in the town.

Lumsden and Carroll, part of the Esh Construction, will enlarge the existing Birdwell roundabout to a signalised gyratory system, incorporating the existing signalised M1 J36.

It also encompasses additional priority roundabouts, and a new link road to enable future development of previously allocated land.

Esh Construction’s Yorkshire operation, which is based in Leeds and employs 250 people, saw off strong competition to secure the contract.

The project is due for completion within a 78-week timeframe.

Andy Gawthorpe, regional managing director of Esh said: “This is a major win for our civils team and one that will bring huge benefit to the local community.  The project primarily requires the construction of 1.5km of carriageway on embankments, major roundabouts and associated ancillary works.

“Investment projects such as this throughout Yorkshire and Humberside are increasingly coming on stream which is hugely positive for the regional construction sector. Our range of geographical coverage and diverse variety of construction and property expertise, backed by a strong financial base have been key to our success in appointments such as the A61 Birdwell Junction improvements.”
